"Eva Zeisel is one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. I have always been pleased to guide a newlywed to discover the Classic century dinnerware. found at C & B.
The Classic Century dinneware is a perfect example of Eva Zeisel's genius :sublime and exquisitely designed for a lifetime.
The idea of finding Eva Zeisel's extraordinary pieces at C & B was so refreshing and sets this company apart from the others.
I encourage those that like this iconic mid century dinnerware to write or call C & B and request that Classic Century be returned to their inventory.
Any issues of this iconic dinnerware masterfully designed by Eva Zeisel should not merit discontinuing but, instead come with the caveat of special handling, etc.
The artist Eva Zeisel deserves to be represented in your store and most of all, introduced to a new generation.
I respectfully request that you reconsider your decision.
"I think it's a shame that Crate & Barrel has discontinued this very important line of dinnerware by the great Eva Zeisel. I've owned a set for several years, and have not experienced the problems that others have reported with crazing. The only problem I've had is that two plates have chips at the edge due to overcrowding my dishwasher. I've had no problems with the glaze at all. I'd say if you love good design buy this dinnerware while it's still available at bargain prices."
"I'm still in love with my Classic Century dinnerware after 7 years. I have never owned "good china" because I have never found anything I really liked. It all looked like something your grandma would own or was too fussy or ornate. The design of these is perfect...modern but organic at the same time. I wanted something that wouldn't be destroyed if it was put in the microwave or dishwasher so I'm super happy with these. But CAUTION, this is not everyday dinnerware. They must be washed on your dishwasher "china" setting and handled with some care. I would like them to be a bit more durable but I love them so much, I want to take care of them. I'm SO SAD that they are being discontinued. My hope is that they will reintroduce them with a little hardier glaze on them and I can slowly replace this set. PLEASE???"
"I have been a fan of Eva Zeisel and her beautiful ceramics for many years now. When I learned that C&B would be making a collection of her iconic beautiful ceramic dinner wear I had to see it first hand. What I found at my local Crate & Barrel store was so appealing with its simple yet sensual curvolinear ergonomic design that I had to collect them immediately.
I personally have most of the collection but decided against getting the dinner, salad and soup bowls as the reviews made me weary of getting these for everyday wear. I prefer to use the other pieces for special occasion and have gotten so many amazing compliments on them!
As I've recently learned C&B no longer is making these so now they really have become collector's items. I wish they would re-consider this decision as I think this is one of the most beautiful collections they have ever produced.
I would even say that if they would produce them with sturdier materials and glazes so that they don't chip or break as easily as they do (see the other reviews), I would be willing to pay 20% more for these as I consider them an investment in something timeless and beautiful."
"The design is beautiful, and it complements our eclectic style. The plates are thinner than stoneware, and they are a bit more fragile. We have granite countertops and two kids. No broken dishes yet! One plate has a chip, and another has a crack in the glazing, but otherwise, they've held up well with everyday use."
"My husband and I chose this dining set for our wedding registry because it's simple, elegant and timeless. We figured this would be a dinner set we could use for many years. Unfortunately, after a year and a half, many of the pieces are chipped or cracked. As many reviewers stated previously, they are so fragile. If you drop your fork on them the wrong way the glaze cracks. They chip constantly. On top of that, as one reviewer already mentioned if your silverware is at all heavy, they fly off the edge of the plate/bowl onto the table which is a disaster if you're eating something with tomato sauce for example because it sprays everywhere. I am so disappointed because these were not cheap and after just a year and a half I'm tired of dealing with them and already wish I had never picked them. I would not recommend these for daily use."
"The majestic Eva Ziesel—a personal heroine of mine—would roll in her grave, were she learn of the poor manufacturing quality her most splendid design is receiving, at the hands of this American corporation.
This is one of my favorite dish patterns of all time, and it breaks my heart how little attention to quality Crate & Barrel seem to offer the obvious manufacturing flaws detailed in other reviews—namely, in the lack of durability of the glazing.
I have been proud to own a full set for the past few years, and already need to order 3 new bowls and 2 new teacups. Reading the reviews though, apparently that's a good run. Yep, the glaze cracks, and the ware beneath gets stained. It's embarrassing, really; but as a craftsperson and designer, I find it shameful for Crate and Barrel to continue to allow.
This is a historic pattern, and there is no excuse to not insist upon a higher standard of manufacture, from the vendor. Really."
"I own a set of eva zeisel china and recently purchased the tea pot and two serving pieces. I feel fortunate to own such beautifully designed and sculptural dishes. I find them of high quality, extroidinary color, as well as practical. They are dishwasher and microwave safe, yet delicate and elegant. I am truly happy with my purchase --"
"I agree that these are nice to look at but they are remarkably fragile because, frankly, they are not well made. We have bought our set twice over by now and it's a shame. I can't recommend this set for anything but the lightest, most occasional duty."
"This dinnerware is very adaptable to contemporary, traditional or antique. It is plain, yet elegant. Being "foodies" and artists, we were in C.and B., for other reasons ...I zeroed in unknowingly on Eva Zeisel's ' comeback' . I love a true story, and (if anyone asks) have a beautiful one to tell of my choice of dinnerware. I love it!"
"i love the shape of these plates, serving pieces are splendid! absolutely beautiful! can't wait to get the entire collection!"

Not just a sugar bowl...
"this is a piece of artwork! I love seeing this beautiful sugar bowl on my counter top every morning. It is elegant, classic, understated and functional too!"
"This review comes years later but thought it could be helpful nonetheless.
With daily use, as others mentioned, the glaze is insufficient for a proper seal. So, my dishes look as if they are crackled and discolored, which also compromised its strength. Several broke. I don't do dinner parties and my kids eat on plastic so, for two adults eating simple sandwiches or a standard chicken dinner, it's unacceptable.
Also, if you have heavy flatware, your guests may embarrass themselves as the raised lip does not allow cutlery to balance at all regardless of the weight mainly on the plate. Lots of forks and spoons launching off the dish.
Unfortunate for these major issues as the design is so pretty."
"Most beautiful dishes I have ever owned. I received the entire collection for my wedding (seven years ago) and every time I use the pieces they make me smile!"
"I love the lines, the off-white, the shapes. However don't order this online! I ordered a teapot and it came with a poor glaze application, C&B send a replacement, with a similar issue! The third one was perfect. I still love the dishes, especially the serving dishes, and would buy more-will buy more as needed!"
"I ordered two sets of these dishes. Within the first order, despite seeming to be very well packed, several arrived broken and many, especially the bowls seemed cracked or crazed. Prompt replacements were sent. Alas, many of those bowls were also crazed, so I called for replacements of those. Then, I put some of the dishes in the washer. Too many of them had little spots, usually on the back, where the glaze was interrupted. During washing, water infiltrated through those holes. That caused darker water spotting to appear on the front adjacent to each of those holes. At that point I felt the likely serviceability of these dishes was never going to be satisfactory. I returned them all. Throughout all customer service was excellent. I just wish the quality of the product was worthy of their efforts, as well as of the history of this lovely design."
"The crazed bowls were promptly replaced, but since then more crazing (lines,) on dishes. What's worse now dark swirls under the glazes are showing up. One or two items at a time are blistering, showing dark lines abd swirls, and crazing. Fired badly. Do NOT put in dishwasher, though Crate and barrel says you can. This set, while aesthetically pleasing, has been so badly manufactured, fired, you should not buy them."
"Unique & beautiful dining set... BUT beware that the plates crack internally (3 out of 6 have cracked; would like a full set but afraid they will keep cracking). The plate doesn't break in half but you can see the crack marks on the top and underside.
These were my wedding registry dinnerware and I love them but for this (large) flaw."
